What Are Scleral Lenses?

Scleral lenses are innovative specialty contact lenses made from a rigid gas permeable material (RGP) found in standard-sized lenses.

A major difference between scleral lenses and traditional contact lenses is that scleral lenses are much larger in diameter. Since they are bigger, they rest on the white portion (sclera) of the eye and vault over the clear covering of the front of the eye (cornea). The space between the lens and the cornea acts as a tear reservoir to keep the eyes adequately moisturized.

Due to their size, scleral lenses are more stable and don’t rotate or move when blinking. They fit underneath the eyelids allowing comfortable wear throughout the day.

Ocular Conditions Treated With Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses are ideal for irregular-shaped corneas because they are made from a firm lens material and vault over the cornea. This allows the contact to provide a new regular surface over the irregular cornea.

Conditions scleral lenses can help treat include:

Traditional soft contact lenses tend to rotate on the eye resulting in blurred vision, fluctuation in vision, and discomfort.

Bifocal & Multifocal Options

Each Scleral Lens is custom-fabricated to the unique shape of your eyes. If you are over 40 years old and need reading glasses, the lenses can also be custom-designed to allow for clear vision when looking at far away objects, at the computer, and when reading up close.
